How often should I get my carpet cleaned?
How often you clean your carpet can vary due to activities/events like a party with friends and wine spills, kids or pets with soiled feet walking on carpet, spilled juice or kool-aid, general wear and tear, along with the accumulation of soils and allergens. Dirt is abrasive and can ruin your carpet. Every step you take on the dirt in your carpet grinds the dirt into the carpet fibers and can permanently damage the carpet. Vacuuming several times a week will keep your carpet from needing frequent cleanings. We recommend you vacuum your carpets regularly 1-2 times a week at least. Here are some frequency guidelines you should implement recommended by the EPA:
- 2 persons non-smoking 6-12 months
- 2 persons with smoking 4 months
- With young kids 6 months
- Young kids with pets 3-6 months.
- Commercial buildings may need cleaning more frequently due to higher traffic.
How often should I have my upholstery cleaned?
Most manufacturers recommend having almost all upholstered furniture cleaned every one or two years, depending on how frequently it is used.
Should I have my carpets steamed cleaned?
Steam cleaning or hot water extraction is a good process; however, the large amounts of water used in the steam cleaning process can weaken the carpet backing and more often than not, cause dirt and stains to “re-wick.“ This is the term used when soil and stains resurface. Carpet that has been steamed cleaned will take from 6 to 8 hours to dry and up to 48 hours if they used too much moisture. Our LMCCA (Low Moisture Carpet Cleaning Association) approved process will not only have your carpets Dry in 1 Hour but more importantly, your carpet will be clean!
Why you shouldn’t clean your own carpets?
There are many options for renting or purchasing small carpet cleaning machines at grocery and hardware stores, and they can get some stains out but at what cost? You may think you’re saving money by cleaning the carpets yourself but there is often a surplus of soaps and chemicals that, while they can make your carpets look good temporarily, can leave a film on the carpet itself. The soaps used for these machines are designed to capture dirt, and other soils which means those carpeted areas will get dirty again – and faster than before. Too much water can also be left behind as these machines vacuum up less than half of what they put down which can damage the padding and backing of the carpet, shortening the lifespan of your carpets. We often hear from customers who have used or owned these domestic carpet cleaning machines that they feel their money would have been better spent getting the carpets cleaned professionally and that their carpets are cleaner after being cleaned by Safe N Soft Carpet Cleaning Boise

This varies based on the square footage of each room in your home, how much furniture needs to be moved (less if you move the furniture yourself beforehand), how soiled the carpet is. How long does it take for my upholstery to dry?
Upholstery drying times are difficult to estimate since there are numerous types of upholstery and fabric construction. Drying time is quite dependent upon humidity levels as well as ventilation in the room. The higher the room humidity, the longer the drying time. When we clean your upholstery, we recommend that you run your air conditioner or heater, depending on the time of year. That will speed the drying process. These environmental issues have a significant impact on drying times, however, the type of fabric will have an impact as well. In most cases, expect most upholstery to take several hours to dry.
How long do I have to wait to walk on the carpet or use the upholstery?
The carpet can be walked on with clean shoes, clean socks or clean bare feet while damp. Any activity should be limited to clean foot traffic until the carpet is dry. Use caution when stepping from damp carpet onto hard floors such as tile or hardwood as you may risk slipping and falling. Your furniture should be allowed to completely dry before you return the cushions and pillows to their usual places.

What are the black lines around the baseboards and under doorways?
This is called filtration soiling and is most often noticed on light colored carpet. It occurs after air carrying fine dirt particles passes through the carpet as filters through the space between the carpet and the baseboard or closed door. This happens over time and is not noticed until a build-up has occurred.
This type of soiling is difficult to remove because the soil particles are so fine that they penetrate deep into the carpet pile and often into the backing of the carpet. With special effort, reasonable results can sometimes be achieved. If this service is requested it is an additional cost.
To help prevent filtration soiling, vacuum and sweep the edges of the carpet with a broom or edging tool on a vacuum on a regular basis.

When Should I Replace My Carpet?
The benefits to carpeting are numerous, for one it’s cozy, quiet and easy to install, but more affordable than many other flooring options. High-quality carpeting can last a decade or more with proper care and maintenance but eventually will need to be replaced. There are four signs that it’s time to retire the existing carpet in your home:
Wear and tear: Irreparable matting, tearing and ripping are obvious signs it’s time to replace your carpet. Polyester carpet fibers are known to matte and lose their form—and once this happens not even professional cleaning can revive them. Nylon carpeting is tougher than polyester and responds well to cleaning if there’s still life left in it. There’s also possibility of repairing some small rips and tears. Some areas like stairs and hallways that have significant damage are difficult to address.
Stains: Most carpeting comes with a stain-resistant finish. But over time, this treatment fades and leaves the carpet and pad unprotected. At this point, your carpet becomes more susceptible to deep and stubborn stains—particularly those caused by bleach, wine, mustard and biological substances such as pet urine. Safe N Soft Carpet Cleaning Boise offers services to address these stains, though biological substances can absorb into carpet padding and cause mold and mildew buildup. When stains from urine or mold and mildew are severe and can’t be professionally removed—it’s probably time to consider replacing it.
Enduring odors: much like stains, odors that linger caused from pets and tobacco smoke should be eliminated or noticeably diminished after a professional cleaning. If they remain, it could indicate that they’ve penetrated deep into carpet fibers, carpet pad or the subfloor. And, in the case of pet urine and other biological sources, it may even indicate mold and mildew growth. In cases such as these it is usually more cost-effective to replace the carpet entirely.
Age: After several years, even the highest-quality carpeting will show signs of wear. Carpet fibers will start to lose their structure and resilience. Professional cleaning will yield sub-standard results. You will also see issues with color loss, fading and rippling. Allergy symptoms may increase as aged carpets collect more allergens. Most manufacturers say carpet will last about 10 years with proper care. If your carpet is nearing 10 years or older, you may want to start considering a replacement.
How Much Will New Carpet Cost?
Remember you pay much more to replace your carpet by the square foot then you would to clean it. The cost to replace your carpet will depend on the square footage of the carpeted area and the kind of carpet you choose. Carpet prices start at roughly $2 per square foot and increase with quality. Mid-grade carpet will range from $3 to $4 per square foot, and higher grades cost $5 or more. Experts say you can expect to pay an additional $2.50 to $6 per square foot for new carpet padding and an additional $2 to $6 per square foot for installation. Regular cleaning protects your investment by removing abrasive elements that destroy the carpet fibers.
